De SM-4 Mobile van Mercury Instruments is ontwikkeld op basis van de beproefde SM-4 mercury stack gasmonitor. Het meetprincipe en de techniek, de thermokatalytische reactor, de detector en de monstersonde zijn identiek aan die van de stationaire SM-4.
